From ELLE

If the world of facials sounds about as daunting as stepping into a Chanel boutique on Bond Street, then you’ve come to the right place.

Sorting the game-changing facials from the ‘not really worth it’ ones, we’ve rounded up the best facials that are actually worth spending your hard earned money on (and asked the questions you really want to know the answers to as well).

Table of Contents

The Mindful Facial at Dr David Jack Clinic, £500 for 60 minutes

The vibe?

Think anti-anxiety hypnosis meets a high end Harley Street facial. Yes, really. This alternative facial seeks to improve your mental wellbeing as well as your complexion through a combination of bespoke hypnosis courtesy of hypnotherapist Malminder Gill and a dermaplaning-based treatment designed by Izabela Pawlitka, Head Facialist at Dr David Jack’s clinic.

Is it for my skin?

Yes! In fact, it’s for your skin and your brain. The idea is to rid your mind of emotional burdens whilst detoxing your skin from physical ones, leaving you lighter, and clearer in your complexion and thoughts.

What does it do?

Designed to treat anxiety holistically through mind and body, the Mindful Facial is a two part process. First, ahead of the treatment hypnotherapist Malminder Gill will contact you for a bespoke consultation to tailor the hypnosis aspect of the treatment to your specific needs. Whether it’s confidence, anxiety, or stress that you suffer with, Gill will work on a program specifically designed to help you address these issues whilst in the ultra relaxed state of enjoying a facial (now that’s the kind of hypnosis we can get on board with).

Next, you’ll find yourself in a dreamy sky blue treatment room hidden above Harley Street where Izabela will discuss your skin’s needs before beginning the facial with a deep cleanse. Meanwhile Gill starts the hypnosis, lulling you into a semi-conscious state through a soundtrack of soothing spa music and a series of instructions from Gill herself.

As the cleansing phase of the facial moves onto a series of light acid peels and dermaplaning to physically scrape away toxins, vellous hair and dead skin, so Gill’s words start to address the shedding of stress and tension.

Best part?

Skincare addicts will find the physical scraping aspect of the facial oddly satisfying, whilst the more cognitive clients will take comfort in Malminder’s hypnotic voice and thought provoking words.

Weirdest part?

Although the logic of addressing your mind and your skin at the same time makes sense (especially when both types of treatment involve laying horizontal on a bed with a therapist), it can be a slightly jarring experience working through stress and anxiety during a time normally allocated for escapism and, whether we mean to or not, sleep.

Can you actually see results?

If baby smooth skin that’s prepped and plumped for your most flawless foundation application ever is what you’re after then this facial is the one. As the acid peels and dermaplaning remove any lumps, bumps or face fuzz through one seriously extensive exfoliation, you’re left with a fresh new blemish-free layer of skin. Not to mention, a calmer mind.

Downtime?

Compared to other facials this involves a series of active chemical and mechanical exfoliating treatments that get the job done which means you will be left with redness for the next hour or so. We’d recommend treating yourself to a mind/body overhaul a couple of days before your big event to allow your skin enough time to chill out and feel truly zen.

Bang for your buck?

No, the Mindful Facial isn’t exactly cheap. But, when you take into account that you’re getting a 1:1 session with two expert therapists for an entire hour, and the fact that you’re combining your weekly therapy sesh with a Harley Street facial, the price is more than worth it. Add to that a recording of Gill’s hypnosis that’s sent on to you after the facial to listen to again in your own time and it’s a one stop self-care shop.

La Mer The Signature Facial at the Spa de La Mer, Harrods, £200 for 90 minutes

The vibe?

La Mer, La Mer and more La Mer. Step down to Harrods’ recently opened oasis under their Knightsbridge store and you’ll find a spa haven complete with private treatment rooms dedicated to the best beauty brands in the biz. Trust us, the La Mer room doesn’t disappoint. Larger than our London flat with more marble orbs and plush furnishings in La Mer’s signature shades of green and gold, we could stay here all day.

Is it for my skin?

We’re yet to meet someone who’s skin doesn’t love La Mer to be honest… But, rest assured your face will fall head over heels with the full roster of La Mer’s iconic skincare that feature in their Signature Facial. Designed more to soothe than to gain visible results, if you’re looking for a high-tech all singing all dancing facial complete with lasers, this isn’t for you. But, if you’re up for over an hour’s escape from the world where your face is treated to endless skin-softening lotions, sheet masks and moisturisers infused with La Mer’s legendary Miracle Broth, in a room that feels more like a comforting cocoon minus the spa music (just wave sounds here), then this is very much the facial for you.

What does it do?

Hold tight for the hero part of the facial where pure Miracle Broth is applied to your face. So major is this application of La Mer’s concentrated elixir that the therapist chimes bells to announce its arriv
al on your skin. Packed full of fermented vitamins and minerals derived from sustainably-harvested giant sea kelp, this direct dose is designed to rejuvenate and nourish your skin. Expect plushy, plump and perfectly hydrated skin that looks like it just got some really good news.

Best part?

Everything. The head massage, the arm and hand massage, the face massage. Mainly, the massage. Favouring bespoke massage techniques over machines, La Mer’s facials utilise unique movements and strokes to move your face and ease in their skincare. Combine muscle-soothing massage and La Mer lotions and potions and you’ve got the best half nap you ever took.

Weirdest part?

Chiming to proclaim the arrival of the pure Miracle Broth could have been startling in our semi-conscious state, but a gentle warning from the therapist introduced the change of pace perfectly.

Can you actually see results?

If the theory that stress, or lack thereof, is good for your skin, then consider this facial your complexion’s new (calming) best friend. The most restorative hour we’ve spent in Zone 1, well, ever, expect glowy, hydrated skin with a satisfying sheen from all the La Mer goodness that’s been comfortingly kneaded into your face.

Downtime?

Almost nothing. Yup, this is the ultimate facial direct to dinner situation. We went straight to after work drinks and skipped the make-up altogether.

Bang for your buck?

With the sheer amount of La Mer products being liberally applied to your skin, it’s hard not to consider this luxurious radiance-boosting facial more than worth the price tag. Add to that the instant ‘spa skin’ we walked out with and this is definitely one for gifting yourself or treating your favourite people to. Because, when it comes down to it, can you really put a price on escapism?

Chanel The Sublime Treatment at Chanel Privé, Harrods, £220 for 90 minutes

The vibe?

Chanel as hell: luxurious and chic in spades, but also with very trustworthy skincare. Down a sweeping staircase in Harrods’ newest beauty space, the room is all white and gold and serene and super private. The therapists are as lovely as they are knowledgable, and the focus is as much on you having some serious downtime as it is about you leaving with gleaming skin (which you will).

Is it for my skin?

The products used are catered to each skin type, so yes. Nothing is going to be too crazy active, but always let your therapist know if you’re super sensitive. Because Chanel skincare is all hydrating, it’s especially good for dry skin and anti-ageing.

What does it do?

The techniques, tools, and Chanel skincare used have been chosen to reactivate and re-oxygenate the skin, which will result in firmer and hydrated skin. It will also, importantly, send you into a deep, deep nap. Especially the hand massage given while masks are doing their work. Heavenly.

Best part?

Without sounding too on-the-fence, the whole experience is really the best part. From the CC logos on the sarong, hair band, mirror, ok everything, to the incredibly plush bed, to the gleaming Harrods staircase that leads you to the room, everything is swanky and sophisticated. The fact the facial is thorough and effective is almost an added bonus.

Weirdest part?

Icy balls. This is the only way to describe them we’re afraid. Two spheres that, harnessing the power of cryotherapy, are rolled up and around your face to tighten things up. If you are in a deep sleep at this stage, it’s a rude awakening, but quickly feels refreshing and invigorating.

Can you actually see results?

The Chanel-y glow is impossible to ignore, and although you shouldn’t be putting your hands on your freshly cleaned skin if you DO, it’s bouncy to the touch. The cyro aspect means your cheekbones will be poppin’ too.

Downtime?

None. In fact not only will your glow go from zero to one hundred, but your therapist can add some light, skin-friendly coverage with Chanel’s make-up afterwards if you’re not off home to continue your napping.

Bang for your buck?

It’s over £200, so we can’t say it’s a bargain. But considering the length (and ability to add a make-up touch up on), the cost per minute isn’t so bad. Like anything Chanel, it’s an indulgent treat, and we all deserve those from time to time.

Japanese Facial Massage at Hiro Miyoshi, The Ritz, £145 for 60 minutes

The vibe?

Located inside one of the most famous five-star hotels in the world, Hiro Miyoshi is an oasis of modern, opulent luxury. Decorated with caramel-hued tones, dark wooden surfaces and gold-coloured accents, the space is light and airy with overhead lightening and soft white furnishings. There’s a quiet sense of calm among the black-clad therapists, which is a welcoming contrast to the hustle and bustle of the Michelin-starred dining room below.

Is it for my skin?

You can breathe a sigh of relief as all skin types can undergo this t
reatment. A consultation is provided before the facial starts which gives you a chance to voice any allergies or sensitivities you might suffer from. Better yet, the spa uses Alteya’s steam-distilled organic Bulgarian rose oil-rose otto which is a 100% pure, natural oil that doesn’t contain any of those pesky pesticide or herbicide residues. For mums-to-be, a full skin test is always given during pregnancy.

What does it do?

The experience involves a Japanese Facial Cosmo technique which is essentially an all-natural, non-surgical way to give you a mini facelift. The facial increases collagen production as reflex points on the face are gently massaged with a nourishing facial oil, which results in younger-looking skin.

Best part?

Without a doubt, the most satisfying part is the lymphatic drainage. Starting from the chin’s meridian point, the therapist works their hands in an upwards motion up to a lymphatic point at regular intervals so help with lift and better circulation. Five minutes in and you’ll feel less puffy and stiff.

Weirdest part?

Other than feeling like you’re Julia Roberts in Notting Hill walking through the corridors of The Ritz, the only weird thing is when a hot towel is wrapped around your face at several points during the treatment to deep clean your skin. Oh, and don’t be surprised if you fall asleep or snort while undergoing the lymphatic drainage – it happens to the best of us.

Can you actually see results?

A slight bit of redness might occur during the procedure but when it’s done, your face will appear notably more glowy and soft. We imagine it’s how we’d look if we had a solid 24-hour sleep and two-week holiday – that’s how good the effect is.

Downtime?

Nada. It’s advised that you try not to touch your face too much straight after for maximum benefit.

Bang for your buck?

The use of Rose Otto cleansing milk by Alteya Organics and organic jojoba oil alone to remove the make-up is worth the experience. With a massage, toner, steamed towel, and serum added on top, we’d say this is great value. Also, it’s The Ritz.

Signature Facial at Skinwork at Alex Eagle, £140 for 70 minutes

The vibe?

Hidden underneath the fashion editors’ favourite store, it’s industrial-come-cosy chic. Although sub-terrarium, it’s surprisingly perky, with exposed brick whitewashed walls and therapists in white denim dungarees.

Is it for my skin?

If your pores are full to the brim of gunk and complexion is looking particularly dull, yes. But not if you have a pacemaker or metal implants somewhere on you (galvanic technology used to ramp up the facial can’t be used in that case).

What does it do?

Clears a congested face more efficiently than one of those super-powered patio cleaners you want-but-definitely-don’t-need from QVC, via an anti-bac pore extraction and thorough cleansing. The skin is then rebooted with antioxidant and hydrating goodness to leave you with a squeaky clean glow.

Best part?

The extractions, which are started with a machine then finished manually, making for a super thorough do-over. A ‘oh, there’s lots in this one’ from your therapist is weirdly satisfying.

Weirdest part?

You’re turned into a pampering-psychopath for a segment of the treatment when a Hannibal Lecter-esque leather mask is draped over your face, under which the galvanic currents work the products into the skin. Weird, but makes for a great selfie.

Can you actually see results?

Apart from a hint of redness if you’ve opted for a peel, things will look seriously glowy. Due to how thorough the cleansing is, expect beaming skin for daysssss.

Downtime?

Nil. Just SPF yourself if you’re heading back out into daylight after.

Bang for your buck?

Since the combination of expert extractions and top-spec technology is tricky to find, definitely. There are often offers on add ons and perks on offer too.

HydraFacial at Waterhouse Young Clinic, £230 for 45 minutes

The vibe?

This is a clinic led by cosmetic surgeons, so it feels like a proper, upmarket medical centre. They offer aesthetic procedures like botox and fillers, but also incredible skin treatments. Just ask model fans like Cara Delevingne and Suki Waterhouse (admittingly her father is the owner, but still…)

Is it for my skin?

If you’re prone to spots and blackheads this is the one for you. The HydraFacial is extremely effective but also soothing on the skin, so sensitive skin types can happily take part too. It’s more rejuvenating than others, so especially good for a more mature client.

What does it do?

A killer-combo of cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection, it goes a long way in smoothing fine lines, eradicating pigmentation and purifying congested or acne-prone skin. The device used in the facial (a hydradermabrasion nozzle) means everything is carried out in a thorough yet regulated way.

Best part?

The fact that this whizzy machine sucks out ALL THE GRIME from every pore. The ‘vortex technology’ vacuums them out, whilst pushing serum-filled liquid into them.

Weirdest part?

The nozzle feels like a tiny wet hoover going over your skin. It’s not painful but just a bit… odd.

Can you actually see results?

Definitely, especially if you invest in a course of a few. The power of the machine (rather than good old human hands) means the actives really get deep into the super-cleanse skin, so the results are near-needle like. If you’re thinking about botox or Profhilo, this might buy you some more time.

Downtime?

Nada. You might be a little red in areas but a little tinted SPF can be applied if you’re worried about it.

Bang for your buck?

It’s not a ‘oh a fancy a little treat’ facial at this price, but a great investment if you have a big event or wedding coming up as the results are so top notch.

Sunday Riley Ice Clear Facial, £120 for 1 Hour exclusively at Hershesons

The vibe?

The first (and only) signature facials from the brand worldwide, Hershesons feels like the perfect place to get a facial without the fussy bouji frills. The ideal facial for the anti-spa fan.

Is it for my skin?

Ice Clear is for congested or blemished skin, so those with a different skin type should opt for the Ice Lift (same time, same price) to focus on lifting and hydration.

What does it do?

Purges, cleans and balances spotty, difficult skin whilst hitting it with a heavy dose of hydration and brightening.

Best part?

What to
pick! After a luxurious cleansing, extraction, toning and massaging, the facialist uses the CRYO Therapy face tech to cool the skin, reduce inflammation and remove redness. Followed with blue LED light to destroy any bacteria (preventing further breakouts and infection) this is one well thought out facial.

Weirdest part?

The CRYO is definitely an odd but enjoyable experience. The foot massage whilst the LED is being done is a little unexpected, but not unenjoyable. You can opt out of it, if you want.

Can you actually see results?

Yes, yes, yes! Immediately you skin looks clear and glowing as well as feeling supple and smooth.

Downtime?

None! This is one of those facials that requires no resting period. You go from treatment room to night out without a pitstop or lots of concealer.

Bang for your buck?

Definitely. Most LED treatments cost £60 on their own, so for that, CRYO, extractions and a normal facial for just double, it makes it well worth it.

Su-Man Skin Reborn Sculpting Facial At The W Hotel Away Spa, £250 for 60 mins

The vibe?

After travelling up through the disco ball-bedecked W Hotel lobby, arriving in the seriously zen Away Spa is a welcome escape from the manic Leicester Square location. The treatment room is your typical all-white slightly clinical situation but Su-Man’s fun personality immediately puts you at ease. Although this is a major investment facial, Su-Man’s legendary status and face transforming powers make a must-try. Think a facelift minus the needles.

Is it for my skin?

Su-Man is the queen of facial massage and skin sculpting, rather than treating specific skin concerns, which means it works on everyone. Because who doesn’t want higher cheekbones?

What does it do?

Although a teeny tiny person, Su-Man’s hands hold serious strength, which is ideal for massaging and sculpting your face into its most gravity-defying self. Your face will look firmer, lifted, luminous and seriously healthy once Su-Man is done with you.

Best part?

In short – all of it. There’s nothing better than the feeling of someone who truly knows what they’re doing cleansing, massaging and generally pampering your face. The crazy thick mask might feel unsettling at first, but once we got used to it (and enjoyed the shoulder massage in the mean time), the peeling off of the thick, rubbery texture was surprisingly satisfying.

Weirdest part?

Prepare to take your socks off, yup, this facial includes a foot massage, amongst everything else. Su-Man believes that in order to re-invigorate and sculpt the skin on your face, you need to massage the soles of your feet. Also, it’s super relaxing.

Can you actually see results?

If brighter, smoother, firmer skin is what you’re after, then it’s a strong yes. De-puffed, glowy and with a stronger jawline than Allison Williams, we set off through Leicester Square completely make-up free.

Downtime?

None at all. If anything, our sudden lack of eye bags and fresh complexion made us want to go for drinks, if only to show off our lack of concealer.

Bang for your buck?

Although the location isn’t necessarily the most luxe for the amount of money you’re paying, what you do get is Su-Man’s years of experience and a pair of hands that work wonders. Make the most of the splurge by getting Su-Man to prescribe a bespoke skincare routine for you whilst she’s doing her thing.
